Dr Pragati Gautama began working at Waitaki District Health Services Ltd  on the 7 th of January 2019. She has had an extensive career in medicine, growing up in London and attending the Royal London Medical School in Whitechapel. Dr Gautama has a passion for rural generalist medical practice and has been involved in a number of services over the last ten years while living in Central Otago for around 20 years.

Dr Gautama has been involved in a wide number of services over the past ten years in Rural medicine including as the Clinical Leader for the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine (South Island), Rural General Practice (Fellow RNZCGP and Member of the Rural chapter Board), four years as a Limited partner at Cromwell Medical Centre. In the last ten years she has obtained Post Grad qualifications in Ultrasound and become a trainer for both Advanced Paediatric Life Support and Emergency Management of Surgical Trauma.

Her varied career includes a period of nearly two years working as a volunteer doctor in Papau New Guinea and she has worked through a few serious disasters including a volcano eruption while in PNG; working in a rural hospital with burn victims from the volcano, and during the Christchurch earthquakes in 2011; where she worked in a medical team in Latimer Square for 24 hours.

Dr Guatama has a passion for equity, in terms of delivering healthcare in rural environments and believes in improving education opportunities for all Clinicians. Her goal is to have everyone working to the top of their scope and meeting their potential.
